There are four economically important neoplasms in poultry: Marek’s disease, lymphoid leukosis, a runting disease and chronic lymphoma caused by a nondefective reticuloendotheliosis virus, and lymphoproliferative disease of turkeys. Several other neoplasms caused by viruses or other factors are of incidental importance.
Marek’s disease is caused by a herpesvirus. Lymphoid leukosis, reticuloendotheliosis, and lymphoproliferative disease are each caused by retroviruses that are antigenically distinct from each other.
